Are You Ready To Be Courageous?

Participating in coaching can be a difficult and challenging journey. It takes courage and a level of readiness to become who you really are.

Dr. Brené Brown outlines courage in 5 steps:
1. Asking For What You Need.
2. Speaking Your Truth.
3. Owning Your Story.
4. Setting Boundaries
5. Reaching For Support.

I really like this outline and I think these are the exact steps required to participate in any coaching process. Whether you are joining a sports team or following a path to leadership or exploring your personal development you need courage to work with a coach.

Let me explain about that courage by expanding on Dr. Brown’s steps.

Step 1 Asking For What You Need.
Most of us don’t want to ask for help. We think that asking for help shows that we are weak and exposes our vulnerability. We don’t like that and yet “if you don’t ask you won’t get”. Ask yourself…”what is the worst that can happen if I ask someone to help me?”. I think you will find that the answer to that question will open the door to the next adventure in your life.

Step 2 Speaking Your Truth.
Notice the wording here Speaking YOUR Truth. Coaching is all about you. It is the place for you to be honest with yourself and say what you think to an individual who does not judge your truth and will repeat your words back to you so you can hear what you say. When was the last time you listened to yourself, not just heard yourself speak, I mean realllly listened to yourself?

Step 3 Owning Your Story
Now that you are beginning to hear yourself it’s time to believe what you are saying. It’s time to appreciate your story; to accept yourself for who you are; to recognize how all of you – the good, the bad, and the ugly – works together to be YOU and YOU is a good thing!

Step 4 Setting Boundaries
Now that you have identified YOU it is time to take care of yourself by setting the boundaries that will define you. It is time to introduce yourself to the world as the new YOU and let the world know that you are the most important person in your life.

With apologies to Dr. Brown I need to add an interval step here.
Step 4+ Be Ready to Find the New You
Sometimes you will follow Steps 1 through 4 and realize that you are not quite ready to reach out for the support that will help you acknowledge and accept the new you. That’s ok because this next step is the big step. This is the step where change happens and the new you emerges. So take a breath and step out there. You can do this!

Step 5 Reaching for Support (Accepting and Working with the New You)
Congratulations! You need to be proud of yourself!
And you did it all by having the courage to step into the adventure of coaching.

When you are ready to begin that adventure please call me – It would be my privilege to work with someone as courageous as you.

It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are.
